The Manchester Gold Racquet 2007 (“The Northern Open”) 21st – 23rd September 2007
Preliminary Announcement
Entries are invited for the Manchester Gold Racquet Tournament to be held at the Manchester Tennis and Racquet Club over the long week-end of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September 2007.
The Tournament will comprise both an open singles rackets competition for the Manchester Gold Racquet and an open rackets doubles competition. Competitors will be entered for both the singles and the doubles unless they make a specific request to the contrary. If practicable, a “Plate” competition will be arranged for first round losers, but this cannot be guaranteed.
The entry fee for amateur players will be £20. There will be no entry fee for professional players. Reasonable expenses will be paid to professionals based in the United Kingdom; and the Club will consider on an individual basis whether to reimburse all or part of any expenses incurred by professionals based overseas.
It is not presently anticipated that any play will take place on Thursday 20th September 2007. It might nonetheless be of assistance to the organisers if any player who would be available to play, if required, on Thursday could include this information in his entry form. But unless any matches have to be scheduled on that day, the rackets court will be available for practice throughout the whole of Thursday.
All competitors must be prepared to make themselves available to play at any time on Friday 21st September 2007. Consideration will, however, be given to any reasonable request as to playing times. Any such request should if practicable be set out on the entry form.
It is envisaged that there will be an informal hot-pot supper at the Club on the evening of Thursday 20th September 2007 for competitors, their partners or guests. But that will depend on the number of persons who would wish to attend. No specific event has been organised for the evening of Friday 21st September 2007. But, if required, a group reservation could no doubt be made at one of the excellent restaurants in Chinatown or an expedition could be arranged to some of the night-spots in the City centre.
The annual Gold Racquet Ball will be held on the evening of Saturday 22nd September 2007. All competitors are cordially invited to this black-tie event. Tickets may be purchased at the discounted price of £35 each.
Lunch or sandwiches will be available at the Club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is likely that a level over-60’s real tennis doubles tournament will be held at the Club over the same week-end. There should be some high-quality play which will make excellent viewing. Competitors in that tournament will have priority in the use of the tennis court; but it is anticipated that at all other times it will be available to rackets players. The squash court should be available throughout the entire period of the Tournament.
Members of the Club will endeavour to provide accommodation for competitors if required. Requests for accommodation should be made in the entry form. There is a wide range of hotel accommodation in Manchester and suggestions can be made if required.
Competitors, particularly those from the London area should consider travelling to Manchester by train. It is speedy and cheap if booked in advance. Major problems were experienced last year by those who attempted to travel by car.
The entry form should be completed and returned as soon as possible by e-mail to manager@mtrc.co.uk with copies to professional@mtrc.co.uk and to tbhegarty@hotmail.com and should be confirmed by post to the Manageress at the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club, 33, Blackfriars Road, Salford, M3 7AQ, enclosing a cheque for the entry fee and for any tickets required for the Gold Racquet Ball. All bills must be settled before competitors depart.
