New York Challenge
[by dm - 8 Nov 2003]
James Male and Mark Hue Williams defend their World Title against
Alister Robinson and Guy Barker at the Racquet and Tennis Club New
York on the 8th November
An interesting match is in prospect In New
York. Champions James Male and Mark Hue Williams, who won this title
in 2001, when they defeated Neil Smith and Shannon Hazell,in
Philadelphia and at St Pauls School, five games to love.
Smith and Hazell held the title for nine
years, defending it succesfully four times. Alister Robinson and Guy
Barker, winners of the Open Doubles for the last two seasons will
provide a more than adequate challenge for the holders .
Barker and Robinson, have played together
for nearly twenty and won the Public Schools Championship, for
Marlborough, in 1988. They also opened the batting for the school
and know each other strengths well, the steadier Barker balancing
the more volatile Robinson. This is their first World Championship
and nerves may well play a part.

Much will depend on how well Hue Williams
plays. His service which can be devastating may be less effective
under the one serve rule which prevails on North American Courts, and
he can be vulnerable when exposed on his back hand side.
Male, a slow starter nowadays, but who is
an indominatable competitor, will need to bring the best out of his
partner if they are to take an adequate lead into the second leg.
