Joe Bone and Will Fortune of Harrow
made the most of their home court advantage to beat Cheltenhams
James Rock and Sam Mason, 18/13,15/9,15/9,15/8 in the 1st pairs
match. Bone ,runner up in last seasons Foster Cup and winner of
the colts[under 16] singles in 2002 was the dominant player
producing good service runs when it most mattered.
In the first game Cheltenham took an
early 7/1 lead ,helped by Harrows tendency to put too many balls
onto the back wall. Rock, runner up in last seasons colts
doubles[under 16] championship with regular partner Nick James,
absent from this fixture through injury, was ably backed up by
Mason and they looked certain to win the game when leading 13/9.
At this point Bone started to serve to a better length and had a
run of nine points to take the game 18/13.

He started the second game in the same
vein to go into a 4/0 lead. By now the rallies were fast and
furious with all four players seemingly content to sacrifice
accuracy for pace and a good number of unforced errors ensued,
both in the course of the rallies and on first service. Harrow
were always on top in this game ,leading 11/5 and although the
Cheltonians pegged them back to 9/11, they were unable to win
another point and Bone once more served out for the game which
Harrow took 15/9.
Harrow threatened to run away with the
third game taking an 8/0 lead in their second run of serve.
Cheltenham stuck to their task however and pegged them back to
level the score at 9/9, at which point a rush of blood caused
successive double faults by Rock and Mason and although they
gamely put out Bone and Fortune for the loss of only one point, a
great return of serve by Fortune, who was by now finding his game
abruptly ended their resistance and the Harrovians took the game
15/9.
In what turned out to be the final game
Harrow dominated. Despite spirited resistance from their
opponents, in particular Mason, who unleashed some spectacular
hammer serves, they ran out comfortable winners 15/8. A match
played in a very good spirit provided entertaining rallies for
the gallery and the return at Cheltenham next February, when
Cheltenham should be at full strength is keenly anticipated
