Marlborough take Noel Bruce for the 1st time
[by Editor - 1 Nov 2004]
Alister Robinson and Guy Barker[Marlborough] won the Noel
Bruce Cup beating Charlie Danby and Harry Foster [Harrow] in four
straight games. It was Marlboroughs first win in this
competition, which began in 1929.
The Old Marlburians[Ali Robinson and
Guy Barker] beat the Old Harrovians,[Harry Foster and Charlie
Danby 15/2,15/10,15/715/2 to win the Noel Bruce Cup for Public
School Old Boys Rackets at The Queens Club. This was the first
time in the 75 years that the competition has been played that
Marlborough have won. It was also the fourth year in a row that
Foster and Danby had reached the final only to lose.
Marlborough reached the final without
being stretched in the earlier rounds, and indeed except for a
period, at the beginning of the second game, never looked likely
to lose a game in the final. In their semi final they played
Harrow 2 [Alex Titchener-Barrett and Alastair Orchard] and had
cruised to a comfortable 15/6, 15/7,15/9,15/8 win despite some
impressive hitting from Alex and solid defense from Alastair.
Harrow on the other hand had had a much
sterner test from a new Wellington partnership, which combined
the experience of Tim Cockroft with the fresh talent of 2002
Foster Cup winner George Tysoe. Harry and Charlie made their
experience as a pair tell in the end with a
15/10,5/15,15/1015/7,15/11 win. |

The final saw the combination of Barkers immaculate play on the
backhand and all round court skills combined with Robinsons out
and out aggression, proved too much for a Harrow pair who were
not allowed to get into the match. They did not do much wrong but
their best efforts were seemingly just brushed aside.
The only time they seemed about to
threaten , when going into a 7 /0 lead at the start of the second
game,on a good run of serve by Foster, the Marlburians having won
serve on an unforced error by Foster, took a 10/7 lead before
winning the game 15/10 in their next hand. They were never behind
again and won the last two games for the loss of only nine
points. This was as good a display of rackets doubles from the
three time Open doubles Champions as is likely to be seen this
season. |
