Smith-Bingham aiming for quick compensation

[by ed - 1 Dec 2004]
Guy Smith-Binghamwho is seeded 1,should stage a succesful defence of his Lacoste Amateur Singles title.

In the Lacoste Amateur Singles, to be played at Queens Club between the 1st and 12th of December, Guy Smith-Bingham will defend his title, with something to prove, as much to himself, as to those in the gallery. Having lost his chance at a World Championship challenge last weekend, Guy must win this title to kick start his quest for another chance at a challenge.

His brother Alex who he plays in the ¼ finals will give him a nice warm up before he plays the winner of the Willie Boone Tim Cockroft match, in the semi-finals. Tim who reached the final of this competition last year, having beaten Harry Foster in the semis, lost to Boone in the round robin section of the Invitation 15/3,15/16,11/15,15/7,15/11 but he is capable of reversing that result if he can keeps his concentration in the face of Boones often demonstrated provocations.

Alex Titchener-Barrett , seeded two, lost to Guy in the final of the Invitation and will have to get past fellow Old Harrovian Charlie Danby in the ¼ final before playing the winner of the John Prenn Rupert Owen-Browne match in the semi finals. Owen-Browne beat Jonathan Larken by three games to one to win the recent US Amateur Singles and is always dangerous and Prenn, if he stays fit throughout the competition can also provide a stiff test for the second seed. Much will depend if Titchener-Barrett can combine his undoubted ball striking ability with more sensible shot selection.
