Angus takes singles and doubles
[by dm - 12 Jan 2004]
Howard Angus won his first Over 40s singles at Queen's Club and
took the Over 40s doubles with Richard Compton-Burnett. Queen's club
Head professional David Johnson won the Over 50s Doubles with Dudley
MacDonald
Howard Angus won both the Over 40's
Singles and Doubles, beating David Makey 15/3,10/15,15/10 in the
singles and teaming up with Richard Compton-Burnett to beat Makey
and Aidan MacEchern 15/7, 15/8.
Angus was much too precise for Makey in
the first game of the singles final, placing the ball well and using
Makey's fierce pace to his own advantage. Makey fought back well to
take the second game, moving better round the court and serving to a
better length. The third game showed Angus at his most astute again
using Makeys superior pace, sometimes taking the pace off the ball
and his clever use of the angles meant that however hard David
fought, Howard was always in control and took the game and the match
with an excellent cross court kill.
The player of the match in the over 40s
doubles was undoubtedly Richard Comton-Burnett. A relative new comer
to the game having only taken up rackets in the last 3 years he took
to the faster pace of the game at this level with no difficulty,he
had opened the batting for Eton in his schooldays, and indeed the
harder Makey hit it at him the better he played making some
wonderful reaction gets at the front of the court. He also served
well and supported Howard to the full.
The Over 50s doubles final was played
after a convivial lunch in the Members Cafe and David Johnson and
Dudley MacDonald took full advantage of their superior expertise in
this department to beat Howard and Bernard Anscombe in straight
games.
