Pick your Partners
[by dm - 16 Feb 2004]
Only one established pair are contesting this
seasons Amateur Doubles.
It is all change
(almost) for this years Amateur Doubles. 2003
winner Tim Cockroft, who won with Rupert
Owen-Browne, has exchanged Rupert for Guy
Smith-Bingham, who played last year with his
brother Alex, the brothers losing to the winners
at the semi final stage. Harry Foster, partnered
Neal Bailey last year and reached the semi finals.
This year he plays with John Prenn and this
partnership are seeded 3.
For the conservatives
amongst us it comes as some relief to note that
the No 1 seeds are that tried, testedand true
partnership of Alister Robinson and Guy Barker, who
won the Open Doubles last season and came within
an ace of taking the World Doubles Championship
from James Male and Mark Hue Williams in January
this year. They are rightly No.1 seeds but Guy
Smith-Bingham is very good at adapting himself to
new partners. This was most apparent when he
combined superbly with Mark Hue Williams to take
this seasons Noel Bruce Cup for the Old Etonians. |
