Atlantic Travellers
[by dm - 19 Jan 2004]

Rupert Owen-Browne travels west to defend his Canadian Amateur Championship at the Montreal Racket Club this weekend while Neil Smith crosses the Atlantic in the other direction to defend his Professional Singles Title at St Pauls School, London.

Neil Smith, who first won the Professional singles in 1985 and has been Champion eleven times since arrives in London this week from Pennsylvannia in an attempt to triumph once more.

The main challenges to Smiths domination of this event in recent years have come from Radley College Professional Mark Hubbard . Hubbard plus Tonbridge Profesional David Makey and Peter Brake, now revitalising Eton rackets, are likely to provide Smith with his stiffest opposition.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Rupert Owen-Browne will try to win his fourth Canadian Amateur Championship. Owen-Browne first won this Championship in 1995, and as he showed last year in defeating Guy Smith-Bingham by three games to one at his best he is still a match for anyone. His main challenge is likely to come from Jonathan Larken winner in 2001 and 2002,and Guy Devereux but Montreals own Bart Sambrook, himself winner of this Championship in 1993, showed in the recent US Amateur, in which he defeated Guy Devereux, that he is running into form at the right moment.
