Marlborough to take first Noel Bruce
[by dm - 21 Oct 2004]

Ali Robinson and Guy Barker will be keen to become the first Old Marlburian winners of the Noel Bruce Cup for Public Schools Old Boys Doubles

Marlborough 1, represented by Alister Robinson and Guy Barker are favorites to add their name to the that of the 8 other schools to have won the Public Schools Old Boys Doubles [The Noel Bruce Cup].

In the 75 years since it started the competition has been won by Radley,Rugby, Tonbridge, Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse, Winchester and most recently Wellington for the first time in 2001 and then again in 2002. Holders of the Open Doubles and narrow losers, to James Male and Mark Hue Williams, of last seasons World Doubles Challenge, Ali and Guy are seeded to meet Harrow 1[Harry Foster and Charlie Danby] in the final.

Foster and Danby have been losing finalists for the last three years, twice to Wellington and once to Eton and this time should meet Wellington 1[Tim Cockroft and George Tysoe] in the semi finals. This is a new partnership for Wellington as for the last few years Tim has been partnered by Toby Sawrey-Cookson. Tysoe won the Public Schools Singles [The Foster Cup] in 2002 and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the senior ranks.

In the early rounds one of the most interesting matches could prove to be that between Eton 1 [Willie Boone and Alex Smith-Bingham] and the Harrow second pair of Alex Titchener-Barrett and Alastair Orchard. The winner of that match will play the Marlburian first seeds in the semi-finals.
