Barker and Robinson win thriller
[by DM - 24 Feb 2004]
Alister Robinson and Guy Barker beat 2nd seeds Tim Cockroft and
Guy Smith-Bingham in 7 games to win their second Amateur Doubles
Title
No 1 seeds Alister Robinson and Guy Barker
won their second Lacoste Amateur Doubles at the Queens Club, beating
the No 2 seeded pair Tim Cockroft and Guy Smith-Bingham by 4 games
to 3, 15/9,7/15,6/15,15/9,14/18,15/9,15/3. This was a match
enlivened by extremely hard hitting and some outstanding retrieving
by all the players, which kept both partisan and neutral spectators
gripped from start to finish.
Robinson and Barker had the easier path to
the final beating Charlie Danby and Neal Bailey in four games in
their semi-final 15/6,15/5,15/9,15/11, whereas Cockroft and
Smith-Bingham had had a very tight match with John Prenn and Harry
Foster winning in seven games 7/15, 15/12,15/11
9/15,9/15,15/12,15/9. This was a match that Prenn and Foster looked
like winning at three games to two and 12/8 ahead in the sixth game.
In the first game they had won twelve points in a row when John was
serving.
The final was notable not only for the
fierceness of the striking from all the players, but also for the
number of unforced errors that littered the match, perhaps brought
about by the fact that the retrieving was such that all the players
felt that,in this company, only the very best shot would produce a
winner

The first game was won comfortably by the
No1 seeds and indeed Cockroft and Smith-Bingham did not really hit
their stride until they were 3/11 down, winning six points but
Barker, as he was to do throughout the match, steadiied the
favourites, and coming in second hand at 11/9 won the four points
needed to give them game including two service aces.
The next two games were always dominated
by the second seeds, they reached 13/1 in two service runs and in
the second game and in the third won the game in four. The fourth
game was close to 9/9 but again Barker stepped up to serve out as
second hand. The fifth game produced the best from all four players
with Ali and Tim dominating the front of the court but Tim and Guy
having set 5 at 13 all made no mistakes to take the game
Only now at 2/3 down did Robinson start to
produce anything like his true form and Barker it was who pulled
them through at the end of the game, serving out to win the game
from 11/9 producing three service aces and a great backhand kill.
Losing that game seemed to take the heart out of Cockroft and
Smith-Bingham, who wilted rather winning only 3 points in three
hands before succombing 3/15, Barker winning the last 3 opoints with
service aces. He served the best throughout the match with 22 aces
to 14 by Smith-Bingham,12 by Robinson and 10 by Cockroft.
