Owen-Browne takes US Amateur
[by nara - 26 Nov 2004]
Rupert Owen-Browne beat Jonathan Larken by
three games to one,15/5,16/13,13/15,15/13 at
the Racquet Club of Philadelphia to win his
seond US Amateur title.
Rupert Owen-Browne and Jonathan Larken, two of
the top hitters in the game, met Sunday morning
in the US Amateur final. The ball was cracking
off the walls and sceaming down the sides as
both players were not holding back. Owen-Browne
jumped out to a quick lead in game one with
great shot selection, keeping Larken moving and
forcing errors. Game one went to Owen-Browne
15/5. Game two was the best of the match.
Owen-Browne again jumped ahead early only to
lose the lead later. His power was too much
finally and he managed a 16/13 victory. Game
three went Larken’s way. He, as Owen-Browne
had done before, staked himself to a
comfortable lead only to see it dwindle. Larken
managed to hold on and claim the win at 15/13.
Up
now 2 games to 1, Owen-Browne stormed back and
grabbed a huge lead in game 4, managed to hold
it and win 15/13, taking the Championship 3
games to 1. No one in the gallery was
disappointed with the play during the match.
There were some great rallies but Owen-Browne
was too strong this day and came out the
victor.
The
doubles draw was rather small and resulted in
easy wins for the top seeds up to the semis.
Larken and Devereux easily made it to the
finals. In the bottom half of the draw, the
semi-final between Owen-Browne/Agate and Nemec/Sambrook
was an epic battle going 5 games. Two of the
games went to extra points and in the end
Sambrook and Nemec came out on top. The final
was quick with the transplanted Btits taking
the Championship in 3 games straight.[report
