Treble for Boone, no Oscar but plenty of Ham
[by Editor - 18 Oct 2004]
Willie Boone won the Masters Over 40s singles,Over40 Doubles
with David Makey and the Over 50 Doubles with Aidan MacEchern.
David Watkins and Howard Angus won the Over 60s Doubles.
Willie Boone in a virtuoso performance
won a hat trick of titles at Queens on Sunday. This time it was
not without a struggle as he dropped games in both the final,
against David Makey, and the semi final, against Julian Snow.
Snow who went onto a rackets court for the first time in nine
years a week before the tournament was 7/3 ahead in the third and
final game of his match, thanks to some very fine serving,
cutting the ball fiercely but also hitting it with pace. He also
retrieved superbly and had he been able to kill the ball more
often in the rallies might well have triumphed.
Boone, however does not know about
giving in and using a combination of strong hitting and
histrionics worthy of the late Sir Donald Wolfitt, fought back to
take the game and the match 15/10, 9/15,15/9. In his semi final
against Howard Angus,David Makey had to find his best form to
defeat a tenacious opponnent15/10,14/15,15/13.

Makey dominated the first game and a
half of the final. Having put Boone out for no score he raced to
an 11/0 lead, killing the ball at any opportunity and serving to
a good length. One felt if he could have finished off the game
quickly, Boone who was struggling to find his form, might not
have got back into the match, which was only the best of three.
Boone however hit his stride in the
middle of the second game and with Makey starting to make some
unforced errors won that game and 15/111 and the next for the
loss of only 5 points.
In the doubles Boone and Makey paired
up to beat Angus and Richard Compton-Burnett 15/6,15/8, and in
the Over 50s doubles Boone and Aidan MacEchern won their third
over 50s title beating Angus and David Norman 15/8,18/16. Howard
Angus won the over 60s doubles with David Watkins beating Norman
and Andrew Beeson 11/15,15/13,15/4 |
