Eton trump Winchester aces

Eton were too strong at all levels when they beat Winchester in
an inter schools match at Eton
The Eton rackets players achieved a
comprehensive win over Winchester, winning all four matches for the
loss of only three games. In the first pair match Ted Molson and
Fred Burgess defeated Mike Bailey and Archie Fellows four games to
love,17/14,0/15,15/13,15/12,18/15.
In the first game Eton took an initial 5/2
lead before Winchester, fought back thanks to some hard hitting from
Bailey and good serving from both Bailey and Fellows, and at 12/5
seemed to have the game won. At this point the Eton pair showed
admirable sang-froid and determination and, helped by a seeming loss
of concentration on the part of Bailey, came back to 10/12.
Winchester having taken back the serve reached game ball but were
unable to convert their advantage despite having three hands at
14/10. Having reached 14 all Molson and Burgess took the set 3/0.
Losing this game seemed to galvanize
Bailey and Fellows and they were unstoppable in winning the second
game to love. Once again the Etonians refused to be rattled and
reasserted their authority to take the next three games, all of
which were keenly contested. Molson and Burgess looked to work
better as a team and this combined with their coolness stood them in
good stead.
