World Singles

......................................................................................................................................

[by DM - 18 Jan 2005]

Saturday 22nd 9.00 pm 1st game 15/11,Foster;2nd game 15/1 Robinson; 3rd game 15/7 Foster; 4th game 15/6 Foster;5th game 15/13; Robinson;6th game 17/14 Foster Foster wins the first leg 4 games to two The second leg is at the Queens Club on the 29th of January.

The form line from the most recent matches between Alister Robinson and Harry Foster, namely last seasons Invitation Singles and Open Singles does not do a lot to help solve the conundrum of who might become the new World Champion. In the Invitation Singles at the start of the 2003/4 season, Foster beat Robinson three games to love 15/12, 16/13,15/8. In this match Harry was killing the ball when he had the chance and Ali was not doing so. The next time they met was in the Open Singles in February 2004 which Robinson won by four games to two 15/5, 8/15,4/1515/12,17/14,15/6. In this match Robinson having survived some fierce hitting from Foster in the second two games, started to use his opponents power to his own advantage to win a close match.

This season Robinson has only competed in the Invitation Singles, in November, and lost to both Tim Cockroft and Rupert Owen-Browne in the round robin, before pulling out. Foster has beaten Guy Smith-Bingham in the eliminator for the World Championship, and neither player took part in the Amateur Singles. Harry tends to play to somewhere near his optimum more often than not; Ali is the more mercurial, whose best can be overwhelming. Much will depend on who responds best to the unique pressure of playing for the World Championship
