Smith-Bingham to face Robinson Ali Robinson photo Murray Glover The withdrawal from the Amateur Championship of World Champion Harry Foster, owing to a grave family illness, presents Guy Smith-Bingham with a golden opportunity for a successful defense of his Amateur Championship. He will most likely play Willie Boone in the semi final and Charlie Danby in the 1/4 finals. Boone has to beat Paul Nicholls in the 1/4s and whoever wins is the beneficiary of Robinsons move to the other half of the draw. Robinson plays John Prenn in the 1/4 finals and if he overcomes the former World Champion will play the winner of the most interesting 1/4 final, that between Guy Barker and Tim Cockroft. Smith-Bingham and Robinson last played each other in the Open semi finals in 2004 when Ali won in 5 games 7/15,16/13,15/10,12/15,15/12. This is Ali's first singles tournament since his unsuccessful World Title challenge in January of this year, but Guy will need to be at his best and cut down on his unforced errors to retain his title.
