Fortune Favoured by Bold Tactic.
Will Fortune of Harrow won a remarkable victory in the final of the Foster Cup, recovering from two match points down to beat James Rock of Cheltenham by three games to two, 8/15,5/15,17/16,15/4,15/13.
At 6/11 down in the third game none of the spectators
gave Fortune any chance and despite a good fight back to 9/12 the game
seemed to be over. At this point, Fortune started to serve an underarm
twist Real Tennis from the left hand service box and levelled the scores
at 12/12 as Rock struggled to read the spin. Rock then put him out and
took the next two points to have Championship
James Rock Charles Hue Williams Will Fortune point. Fortune put him out in turn and won the next 3 points to to go one up in the set to 3. Rock made a good return off a not very penetrating serve, won the next two points to set up his second match point but was unable to convert it and having got back in the box Fortune served another underarm twist to set up his first game point and made sure of the game with another ace. Will continued to vary his serve in the next game and this combined with his much more decisive play during the rallies was successful at unsettling James and the Harrovian went from 4/3 to 8/3 in one hand and lost only one more point in taking the game 15/4. Fortune stuck to these successful tactics in the deciding fifth game taking an 8/2 lead before the Cheltonian who never gave up came back in one hand to level the score at 8/8. Fortune then went to 13/8 in his next hand but Rock came back again to 12/13 and then Fortune having put him out reached match point only to be denied by an excellent return but having conceded one more point he took the Championship on his next serve. The Renny Cup was won by Andrew Stout from Cheltenham who defeated Etonian James Rowland-Clark in five close games 14/16,15/10,11/15,15/6,15/11.
The Incledon-Webber [Colts] was won by Harrow's Sam Northeast who beat James Gibbor [St Paul's] 8/15,15/12,15/7,15/2.
