30th Anniversary Treble for Boone
It is doubtful that when Willie Boone and John Prenn first played each other in the final of the Amateur Championship in 1976, that either of them contemplated the possibility that they would still be competing against the other in the finals of national competitions 30 yearson. In the Masters 40s singles at the weekend Willie beat John two games to love, 15/9,15/4. John, recently arrived back from Australia, where he won the World over 50 Real Tennis Singles was never able to dominate a rampant Boone. The first game provided some classic rackets from both players but Willie controlled the match keeping John at the back of the court and was always in charge in the second. This was the first time Boone had beaten Prenn in this competition. The 40s doubles provided a second victory for Willie when, partnered by Robert Wakely, a welcome newcomer to this competition, they combined well to defeat Howard Angus and Richard Compton-Burnett, 15/3,8/15,15/5. This match provided the most entertaining rackets of the weekend with some thrilling front of court rallies, Compton-Burnett in particular showing lightning fast reactions. In the end the superior services and doubles craft of the two left handers proved too great an obstacle to the former World Champion and his less experienced partner. Willie's third triumph came in the 50s Doubles partnering Aidan MacEchern. They beat Prenn and David Norman comfortably 15/4,15/5. Aidan and Willie have won this title four times and worked much better as a pair than their opposition with MacEchern particularly steady on the return of serve and also contributing two good service runs.
Aidan MacEchern Willie Boone The fourth trophy competed for over the weekend was the Masters 60s doubles which saw a second successive title for Howard Angus and David Watkins, who beat Andrew Beeson and David Norman 3/15,15/9,15/4. The eventual winners took some time to warm up and in the first game and a half Norman's accuracy of serve and Beeson's steadiness during the rallies looked as if it would ensure victory. Angus and especially Watkins found their games in the nick of time and once they had levelled the score at one game all, they were never in trouble in the third.
