Foster aims for first Amateur

World Champion Harry Foster will try to win the only major UK singles title that has so far eluded him when he takes part in the Lacoste sponsored Amateur Singles which runs at the Queen's Club from the 29th of November to the 10th of December. Foster came closest to winning this title in 2002 when he was beaten in the final by Guy Smith-Bingham 15/12,15/3,15/10.

Smith-Bingham is seeded to meet Foster in the final, but he first has to beat last year's champion and 3rd seed Alister Robinson. Robinson did not play in the Invitation Singles in which Harry beat Guy by 3 games to one, but will be a tough proposition for Guy unless he plays and particularly serves better than he did in the Invitation Final. Of all the top players Robinson is the most mercurial and also has a distressing tendency to injury, but his innate talent is undeniable and he will not be unprepared

Guy Smith-Bingham            Jonathan Larken                Ali Robinson

Foster face a probable semi final with Jonathan Larken who he beat in the semi finals of the Invitation Singles in a pretty undistinguished match, notable mainly for the fact that he, [Foster], served more than more than twice as many service aces as his opponent. Foster will need to play better than he did then, as Larken will be more familiar with the quirks of the Queen's court, He will need to be near his best t if he is going to emulate all his post war predecessors as World Champion and win the Amateur Championship.
