Harry Foster

World Champion defends Invitation Single Title.

Harry Foster ,who defends his KBC PeelHunt sponsored Invitation Singles title at the Queen's Club over the next ten days, has already got his season off to a fine start. Partnered by Charlie Danby, he won the Public School Old Boys Doubles for the Noel Bruce Cup. This was the only major prize on this side of the Atlantic that he had not won and it was also the sixth consecutive final that the Old Harrovian pair had contested.

Last season Foster won the Invitation beating Guy Smith-Bingham in a surprisingly one sided final 15/6,15/9,15/5. This year the same two players could contest the final again. Foster would seem to have the simpler route to the knock out stages as his group consists of much the same players as last season, and although he lost to Mark Hubbard in the round robin stages he went on to win the competition and also then beat Hubbard in the final of the Open Singles. Charlie Danby has as much talent as any player but his Corinthian attitude whilst wholly admirable, stops him reaching the very top. The fourth player will be the winner of the qualifying match between Tonbridge professional David Makey and Alex Smith-Bingham.

Smith-Bingham has a trickier task, particularly as he will face a pretty much unknown quantity over here in the shape of Jonathan Larken, who has not been seen on the  Queen's Courts since he lost to James Male in the World Championship of 2003. Larken has now moved back to England from New York, wher he dominated domestic competition and must be a danger to Guy's chances of winning the group. The other New York based player coming over is Neil Smith, who, although not the force he was is still capable of  some tremendous rackets when in the right mood. Neal Bailey has yet to show his best at this level.Draw
