Season full of promise for Foster

World Champion Harry Foster faces a full season of rackets even though there is no challenge for his World title. He will, however play in the World Doubles Championship at the end of the season, when, partnered by Mark Hue Williams they will face the professional pair of Neil Smith and Mark Hubbard. his first foray onto the court should be in the Noel Bruce [Public Schools Old Boys Doubles] September 28-October 12, where partnering Charlie Danby and playing as Harrow 1, they will try to break their unenviable record as bridesmaids ,having been losing finalists for the last six years in a row. The weekend prior to the start of that, Manchester hosts the Gold Racquet. This competition, which used to attract the best players in the world, has slightly lost its shine recently with few of the top players making it onto the Manchester court, often said to be the best in the UK. This year to attract more of the elite the competition is being played a month earlier and although Foster is unable to make it, early entries suggest that a revival of it's earlier prestige may be underway.

The Invitation Singles will give us our first idea as to whether Guy Smith-Bingham will be able to put the disappointments of last season behind him, and win a Singles title that could give him a chance of putting  in a challenge for the World Championship in the 2007/08 season. If Foster defends his title and Alex Titchener-Barrett is back to full fitness it will be an interesting start to the  singles season. The Amateur Singles follows closely after, running from the 29th of November to the 10th of December and will attract much the same players, again trying to beat the World Champion to enable them to put in a challenge. If defending champion Alister Robinson is unable to defend his title it is difficult to look beyond Smith-Bingham as the main opposition to Foster.
