New York Silver Racquet

WJC Surtees, PE de Svastich,  EF Ulmann, referee, KJ de Koning,Jr, W Bristowe

New York, November 5th, by Classicus.

Old Carthusian William Bristowe, twice US Amateur Doubles Champion, and his partner Kendrick de Koning defeated Willie Surtees and Peter de Svastich two games to love in a thrilling final here today in the 14th renewal of this autumn event.

Deadwood, Colorado based de Koning was the surprise star of the match.  In the first game Surtees and de Svastich got to 12/13 before being put out.  De Koning came in, served out the game, and carried on in the second to 10/0, a run of twelve points.  It was all over bar the shouting, as former World Champion Surtees and his partner, former US Amateur Doubles Champion de Svastich, fell short in a valiant attempt to rally.

In the first semi-final Surtees and de Svastich had upset the favoured pair of Guy Devereux, the 2004 US Amateur Champion, who has also won the Tuxedo Gold Racquet a record eight years in succession, and his partner, last year’s Silver Racquet Champion (with Guy Smith-Bingham) Robin Geffen. The score was two games to one.

In the other semi-final Bristowe and De Koning had defeated racquets tournament chairman Peter Pell and his partner Mike Stevenson.

There was a well-attended black tie stag on Thursday evening and a ball on Saturday night.
