The results of the early rounds of rackets tournaments are usually easy to forecast but this seasons Lacoste Open Singles is proving to be the exception with three seeds out before the 1/4 finals and a fourth going out in the 1/4 finals. The most illustrious of the early casualties was former World Champion Neil Smith, seeded 4 who lost to Mark Farmiloe by three games to one, 7/15,17/14,11/15,11/15. Farmiloe, an aggressive player with a sound technique took the initiative throughout, hitting the ball very hard at every opportunity, keeping Smith at the back of the court and making very few errors. Smith also struggled to pick up the ball at extreme pace. Smith's partner in the Challenge for the World Doubles in April , third seeded Mark Hubbard, lost to Willie Boone, who had already accounted for the sixth seed Charlie Danby. Boone served well and Hubbard, after the first game, which he won 15/10, looked tired and disinterested. 8th seed Richard Spender was beaten by Mark Silcock who now faces Harry Foster.
