Hubbard retains Professional Championship but is
made to work. Mark Hubbard retained his Professional singles title at Wellington College, beating David Makey 9/15, 15/9,15/3,15/8. For the first game and a half the Tonbridge professional had the upper hand over the holder, serving to a better length, timing the ball sweetly and moving around the court purposefully. Hubbard on the other hand was finding it difficult to get the ball past his opponent and was not finding a penetrating serve, managing only a single ace in the this game. Makey took an 11/2 lead before the Radley College professional started to find his game coming back to 9/11 in one hand before Makey put him out with lovely forehand return of serve hit hard, straight and low that gave Hubbard no chance. He then took the four points he needed for the game in his next hand. In the second game Hubbard started to find his game and took a 7/2 lead before Makey pulled back to level the scores in two hands . A feature of David's play throughout the match was the quality of his return of serve especially on the forehand side with some lovely down the line kills. Mark was now covering the court better and making fewer errors which put pressure on his opponent who was perhaps feeling the effects of his hard 1/4 final against the 62 year old former World Champion Howard Angus which he had won in the fifth game. His serve was losing it's snap and in an effort to finish the points quickly he was making unforced errors. Hubbard took the game in his next two hands and went to a 9/0 lead in the and then 9/3 and 15/3 to lead 2 games to one. The final game once more saw Hubbrd in control and although Makey continued to make some telling returns of serve and there were some hard hitting rallies ,his lack of service penetration cost him and Hubbard ran out in the end a comfortable winner 15/8. A feature of the match was the return of serve of both players and this combined with the playing quality of the court, which had been refurbished last year, meant that the gallery were able to enjoy some sparkling rallies.
