Hubbard retains title at Eton
Mark Hubbard, Radley College professional, retained his Professional Singles title, beating perennial opponent Neil Smith, 10/15,16/15,15/10,15/11. Smith narrowly escaped defeat in the first round, having lost the first game to Harrow professional John Eaton 8/15, andwas 0/6 down in the second game when the match had to be stopped as the court was becoming slippery.
Hubbard at times seemed to display a lack of urgency, and Smith looked to be in control of the match in both the second and third games leading 13/10 and then 2/1 in the set to three in the second game, and then again having lost that game, taking a 9/2 lead in the third game. He took only one more point in that game, Hubbard showing his undoubted talent to win 13 out of the 14 points contested and Hubbard then went into a 9/3 lead in the final game before Smith started to fight back reaching 10/11 and then 11/12 before Hubbard took the game and the Championship with a run of three.
